Home, School, and the Learning Connection

Preface

Education does not happen in isolation. It is shaped by the dynamic relationship between home and school. This issue brings together research that repositions parents not as peripheral supporters, but as central partners in the learning process. From the strong influence of parental expectations and academic socialisation to the deeper role of home environments in shaping long term development, the studies collectively highlight that meaningful engagement goes far beyond attendance at school events. At the same time, they reveal persistent challenges such as structural barriers, socioeconomic inequalities, and mismatched expectations between schools and families that continue to limit authentic collaboration.

Across diverse contexts including inclusive classrooms, rural settings, culturally responsive approaches, and post pandemic learning environments, the message remains consistent. Effective learning connections require intentional, adaptive, and equitable partnerships. Whether addressing hidden barriers to involvement, redefining engagement in disadvantaged communities, or strengthening communication practices, the insights in this issue emphasize shared responsibility and mutual respect. Together, these summaries encourage educators to rethink how they engage with families, not as an additional effort, but as a core strategy for improving student learning, well being, and long term success.
